Soyou'll need to switch to uppercase. If you prefer, you can write your config file o}ut now, and it'llboot now in upper case. If you're logging on with macros though, it doesn't matter,as long as your pa}ssword is correctly typed in the macro. 1030 MACRO DIALING HomeTerm version 3.3.3 will not au}todial with the 1030s in themacros. The next update will fix this problem with touch-tonedialing (!!) from within the macro} on the 1030. It seems as thoughHomeTerm gets better and better and better! Also, you'll notice that if you hit the sel}ect key in themiddle of a dialing sequence (with M on the 1030), to abort thedialing, the next time access the disk drive, }HomeTerm will lock up.Be careful if you abort the dialing process! The next time you accessthe disk might be to save an imp}ortant buffer, but you'll loseit! I like to dial the number manually and then just tellHomeTerm to dial a 1 to put my }1030 in the originate mode. WHICH MPP HANDLER? To use HomeTerm with the MPP modems you must g}et the HMDRVE.XMOhandler out of DL2. This handler is another "R:" handler for the MPPand will work very well with HomeTerm }although there still seemsto be SOME difficulty with SOME modems on detecting a carrier, butpersistence seems to be providi}ng very positive results. COMPUSERVE DOWNLOADS There is some difficulty in understanding cor }rect HomeTerm/CISXmodem downloading procedure. Here goes MY best attempt: You must give both CompuServe AND HomeTerm t!}he correctinformation for a proper Xmodem file transfer (you can eitherdownload files using .XMO and use Xmodem or you can "}dumbcapture .CRE files. But dumb-capturing is used for the DOCfiles most often, and isunreliable for programs, since there#} isn't any error checking.) That's an important concept in the procedure I'm about todescribe: you are going to prepare$} BOTH HomeTerm AND CompuServe for anXmodem transfer. Here's theprocedure. The first thing to know is that in ALL Xmode%}m transfers, whether Atari bulletin board or person to person or CompuServe, there seems to be a problem with printer interfa&}ces interfering. Ifyou are using an 850 and have your modem attached to an 850 then doNOT worry. If you are using a 1030 or'} MPP and have a parallelinterface attached, you might have to unplug it. Personally I havesevere trouble trying to download(} with my 1030 with my interfaceattached. The problem even seems to occur to the 1030 when there's an850 attached. I've hear)}d that the problem might be the 1030. In any case the problem is not pinned down so if you persistentlyhave trouble, bo*}ot up HomeTerm with your interface unplugged. In otherwords, take the interface OUT before you even turn the computeron! (D+}on't just take it out of the daisy chain before you download.) To use Xmodem you can only download files that have the .,}XMOextender on them. You will type D after the file description (or "DOWfilename.XMO" if you are at the DL prompt) and ask -}for 1 one in thenext menu, or the "Xmodem or Xmodem7" prompt. Then CompuServewill ask for 7 bit Ascii or 8 bit binary trans.}fers, be sure to hit 8bit! You should quickly see "starting Xmodem transfer, hitcarriage return when transfer complete/}." Now go to YOUR menu withthe select key and type "R" for receive. HomeTerm will ask for afilename, and give it. You can t0}ype the D: if you want to but you don'tneed to, unless you want to download to drive number 2. Thenyou type D2: HomeTe1}rm will access your disk and see if there's a file with thesame name on the disk. If there is, it will ask if you want to er2}asethe already present file. If you say no, you have to start over fromthe "R" on your HomeTerm function menu and give a di3}fferent filename. If you say yes, then HomeTerm will go to your disk and erase the file(it's gone for good!). This yes/no st4}uff only happens when you give afilename that already exists on the disk. Finally you will hit return to get back to th5}e interactive screen(what is actually happening between you and CIS). Hit your start key and away she goes! By the6} way you have to do the above steps rather quickly becauseCompuServe will give up after about forty-five seconds. If you fin7}dthat this is not enough time for you to get your thoughts togetherand prepare HomeTerm for the download, you can go to the8}HomeTerm menu BEFORE you tell CompuServe to download. Just don'thit the start key. In other words, go to your HomeTerm9} menu and type "R" and givethe filename information. Then get back to the interactive screen andtell CompuServe you want to:} download. When it says "StartingXmodem transfer, hit a carriage return when transfer complete"THEN hit your start key. ;} Remember that either method will work but I've had more successwith the first method. You just have to be quick. Now <}the transfer will begin. This is important: if you see ONLYnumbers and letters then CompuServe goofed up. You should see GRA=}PHICSCHARACTERS all through the file. Some numbers and letters are fine, but there should be plenty of inverse and graphics >}characters. Ifyou don't see ANY inverse or graphics characters, abort thetransfer by holding down the select key. Then get ?}back to the firstmain menu you see when you first enter the Atari*SIG. Now go back tothe download section (you have to reen@}ter the download section like this to reset it) and type: DOW filename.XMO/PROTO:XMODEM/TYPE:BINto force the proper stA}yle download from a reluctant CIS.*NOTE* You only have to do this if you see a string of numbers, i.e. 345IEF849FIB}instead of numbers, letters and graphics characters. You can go tothe HomeTerm menu to set up for the download (as describeC}d above)either before you give the commands or after-it really doesn't matter. If you get an "Unable to Receive File" D}anywhere in thetransfer then CompuServe is too busy. Try again, or call back laterduring off hours.OFF HOURS ARE: WE}eekdays 6-7 P.M. after 3 A.M. Weekends 8-11 A.M. When you get the downloading procedure intact, gF}o to DL2 anddownload HTCUST.XMO. This program will modify your HomeTerm (a copy only, please) for many neatfeatures as you G}specify. You'll be able to use the joystick withHomeTerm! BBS XMODEM TRANSFER A BBS Xmodem trH}ansfer works exactly the same way on your endexcept: 1==>you will need to be in ATASCII on the BBS and withHomeTerm. I}2==>the bulletin board will give you different prompts thanCompuServe gives you. Most bulletin boards ask if you are using XJ}modem.Hit "Y" of course. If a transfer aborts with a bulletin board then there's garbagein the phone line, but I have NEK}VER had any problem downloading from abulletin board (except with my stupid Ape-Face attached.) Some people have reportL}ed aborts after sector 255. However, all commercial and legal versions of HomeTerm support >255 filetransfers. If you get anM} abort then the problem is in the BBS software,NOT HomeTerm or you (unless you're a thief.) PERSON/PERN}SON XMODEM TRANSFERS Those familiar with Amodem will appreciate person/persontransfers also. With Amodem, if the persoO}n SENDING hits his start keybefore the person RECEIVING, the computers lock up and you getdisconnected. Not so with HomeTerP}m! The sender can hit his start key before OR after the receiverdoes (within a minute at the longest.) No more silly tiQ}minggames. DUMB UPLOADING As for the "dumb" uploads that you will do, say, when you composR}eEasyPlex off line, or compose a message for the SIG off line, setyour delay rate (control D) at about 10. If you are usingS}CompuServe at peak hours, you'll have to set the delay higher. Iactually had to go up to 1500 one day during Christmas! T} It works much better with the Filge editor rather than theprompted line editor. Go to your option menu (type OP from the mU}ainprompt) and you'll be able to select it. If you insist on using the awkward line prompted editor, remember that if yV}ou have a plain carriage return at the beginning ofa line, you will exit the editor and begin spraying text all aroundCompuW}Serve and probably wind up on the Commodore SIG or some otherhorrible location. When you do a dumb-upload, some of yourX} text will be echoedback to you, but toward the end you might not see the text. In fact, you will get the "Upload Completed"Y} message from HomeTerm, but it'lltake up to fifteen extra seconds before it asks you if you want toclear the buffer. Just bZ}e patient, HomeTerm has NOT locked up, as itmight appear, at the end of that dumb upload. CAPTUR[}ING FLEXIBILITY One of HomeTerm's most flexible capabilities is theunlimited buffer. In other words you can capture fi\}les of any lengthwithout having to worry about the buffer filling up. When the 7K (roughly) buffer fills up, HomeTerm w]}ill tellCompuServe or the BBS to stop sending data. It'll then dump thebuffer to the device you specified. For instanc^}e, you could capture this wonderful file to yourprinter (that's P:) and you'd get an instant hardcopy. With the Customi_}zer the stop and start codes can be changed towhatever code the computer on the other end needs. The only codeHomeTerm won'`}t send (yet, I mean 3.3.3) is the break code. But don'tworry about this if you just deal with CompuServe and AMISAtari bulla}etin boards, it's all pre-set for you. There might be a problem with 1030 Unlimited Buffer on AMIS,please yell on what b}you find! COMPUSERVE GRAPHICS Oh, you can't get any of the on-line graphics with HomeTerm, thec}program does not support them. PRINTER CONTROL CODES Finally, I'd like to mention sending cond}trol codes to yourprinter with HomeTerm. Here how: 1-I use the "TYP" feature of DOSXL but I guess a word proc. woe}uld work, clear out all the format info at the top of Atariwriter (you don't have to when using DOSXL of course). f}2-Get out your printer manual and find the control codes you need for the features you want to activate. 3-Type thg}e Ascii values, for instance: Condensed on the Gemini is Ctrl O. So hit Ctrl O. 4-You can type in any strh}ing of commands you want to give the printer: Escape key (twice) @ CtrlO will initialize the printer i} and set condensed print, for instance. 5-Now save this tiny file out to the disk. 6-Now when you are on line,j} hit Xoff to stop the computer right before you get to the text you want to capture. 7-Go to function menu. 8k}-Then go to MiniDos menu. 9-Now use Copy, give the source filename as that tiny file you saved, and give the del}stination file as P: Presto, you have sent thecontrol codes to your printer thatyou want. One word of caution:when tm}here is a variable in the manual (it's"n" in the Gemini manual...) say for instance when you can set thenumber of lines to n}skip at the bottom of the page...don't type ina number like 5 to skip 5 lines! The printer is taking Ascii values,so a 5 wio}ll give you 53 lines!! You would type in the character for theAscii value of 5. That's a control E. Took me a while to figurp}e thatone out! Also, with Atariwriter many of the keys are different: aCtrl O is Ascii 27 or really the Escape key twiq}ce. It's allbackwards for this I'm afraid, so try DOSXL or something else.. TIMER PROBLEMS r} On some computer models you will notice your timer will stopand lose time when it accesses the s}disk drive, whether on a simpledirectory or whether dumping the buffer to the disk. I know it happens on an 800XL, but t}I don't know about the othermodels, but if you notice it there's nothing much to do untilthe next update comes out (real sou}on!) THE END Well there you have all the HomeTerm information you canhandle. Be sure to sv}end in your warranty cards to BatteriesIncluded so that you can get your updates and revisions! Both DOS.SYS and DUP.SYS are on the side #1 of this disk. For documentation regarding DOS 2.0S, refer "Why You Need @}DOS 2", from the April, 1985 issue of Antic magazine -- Vol.3, No.12)Before you begin, you must make a backup copy of your A}original HomePak master disk. The manner in which you copy it is crucial - you must make your copy from DUP.SYS by using theB} "J" command. You cannot simply copy files from the HomePak master disk. The Customizer assumes absolute positioning of theC} files on the disk, and a "J" copy is the only way you can be assured of this.To load the Customizer, put side #1 of this dD}isk into your disk drive, and simply hold down the OPTION key (or remove the BASIC cart., if applicable) and turn on your comE}puter. The DOS menu will then appear. They "L" and then "CUSTOM" in response to the file name. Press return to load and ruF}n the editor. (The Customizer was written in Action!, but you don't need the Action! cartridge to run it.) You will first bG}e presented with a prompt to insert your backup copy of the HomePak master in disk drive 1. Insert the disk and press [RETURH}N].THE MAIN MENU-------------The main menu has 8 selections. To make a change to a particular option, or to load one oI}f the other two menus, press the number key in the left column. (i.e. To change option 2, press the [2] key.)Item 1 (OtherJ} R: handlers (ATR)) is primarily for ATR-8000 users running the RS-232 version of MYDOS. You can toggle between the "DEFAULTK}" setting (use HomePak's built in handler) and the "other.." setting (use a non-standard R:handler.) ATR-8000 users should cL}hoose "other..".Item 2 (Key repeat rate) is for those users who have special hardware or special versions of Atari's O/S wiM}th a built in fast key repeat rate. The default setting is "FAST". Those with such special hardware, or who wish a slower cN}ursor speed should choose "NORMAL".Item 3 (Automatic Line Feed) allows you to set whether or not a Line Feed character (ASCO}II 10) is sent automatically after a Carriage Return (ASCII 13). Some modems (notably Rixon) and some services such as many P}RCP/M BBS's and Delphi, require that a line feed NOT be sent after a carriage return. If you are having difficulty with a BBQ}S accepting your input after you press return, you should try to change this to "OFF". ("ON" is the default setting.) TurniR}ng this option to "OFF" won't affect most services, but some require it, so only change it if you are having problems with thS}is.Item 4 ('Stop' code (XOFF)) and item 5 ('Start' code (XON)) are for those people who use systems that don't use the usuaT}lly standard XON/XOFF control codes. It is rare anymore to find a system that doesn't. It is probably a good idea not to chU}ange this unless you know exactly what is going on. In these items, and in the joystick keys menu, control characters are shV}own as their letter equivalent preceded with a "^" character. SHIFT-CTRL-keys are shown as "SHIFT^" except for SHIFT-CTRL-0 W}to -9 which are Macro keys in HomeTerm.Item 6 (Character set menu) and item 7 (Joystick key menu) take you into the other tX}wo menus in the Customizer. They will be discussed later.Item 8 (Bell on prompt) affects the "* Press any key *" prompt thY}at frequently occurs in HomeTerm. You can turn the bell "ON" or "OFF". ("ON" is the default setting.)From the main menu, Z}once you have finished making alterations to the various defaults, you can write your changes out to your backup of the HomeP[}ak master disk by pressing the [START] button. Or, you can exit the program without making any changes at all by pressing th\}e [X] key. You will be prompted to insert your backup disk in disk drive 1 (if it isn't there already) and given one last ch]}ance to change your mind. In either case, press the [Y] key if you want to write/exit and any other key to abort.CHARACTE^}R SET MENU------------------HomeTerm uses two character sets, one being the master HomePak set and other being the standar_}d Atari set. There are several public domain and commercial character set editors that allow you to create your own characte`}r sets, which you might want to substitute for the HomePak set. There is a sample character set (SQUFNT.HTM) on side #1 of ta}his disk. For a real variety, buy ArtDOS ($10) in the Antic Public Domain Library. It has 25 character sets on it, some of b}which will make HomePak look really bizarre!Item 1 (Load new character set from disk) allows you load your own character sec}t and make it the HomePak "master" set. (Note that this change (and items 2 and 3) affect ALL 3 PROGRAMS.) When asked, suppd}ly the disk filename of your character set and press [RETURN]. Because telecommunications requires a full ASCII set, the Cuse}tomizer automatically alters ASCII 96 and ASCII 123 to 127 to their proper ASCII equivalents. (The copyright symbol at ASCIIf} 16 is also kept, partly for esthetic and partly for legal reasons.)Item 2 (Use default HomePak set) changes the character g}set back to the original set, and item 3 (Use standard ATARI set) changes it to the standard ATARI set. Your currently selecq}?BPATCH OBJB>yAUTORUN MPPB SQUFNT HTMRVHAND DOCK:HTCUST DOCBdCUSTOM B RVHAND OBJB'DOS SYSB*DUP SYSted set is always shown in the menu, and is the one that will be written as the master set.Items 4, 5, and 6 affect the behr}avior of character set changes when switching translation modes. Normally, the default is for the master character set to bes} used whenever in VIDTEX or ASCII mode, and the standard ATARI set when in ATARI mode. Item 4 changes HomeTerm to use the mat}ster set in all modes; select item 5 to use the standard ATARI set in all modes and item 6 to go back to the normal default.u}Note that several ATARI set graphics characters are used in menus and prompts, and your display may look "funny" if your setv} doesn't contain them. It doesn't affect the program's operation in any way, but for cosmetic reasons you will probably wantw} to retain the normal graphics set in your custom set if you want to use one, and only change numbers, letters, and punctuatix}on.JOYSTICK KEYS MENU------------------One feature that was not disclosed in the manual is the ability to use a joysticy}k (plugged into port 1) to send keystrokes. Each direction on the joystick (forward, back, right and left) correspond to a kz}eystroke, and the joystick button sends a fifth. Since HomeTerm Macros are sent via a single keystroke - you guessed it - yo{}u can send whole strings of commands using one joystick movement. The default settings are RETURN (button), CTRL-Q (forward)|}, CTRL-S (back), Macro 5 (left) and CTRL-P (right). I use this configuration myself, with Macro 5 being set to: ^P^W:S}}Kwhere ^P and ^W stand for CTRL-P and CTRL-W respectively. This macro halts the current message being displayed, waits for~} a ':' (in the (UA RE D): prompt) and then sends SK[RETURN] which skips over all replies to the message - handy for skipping }over messages you have no interest in. Using this default configuration, you can scan the entire message base without ever h}aving to touch the keyboard (excepts perhaps to answer a message.)Items 1 through 5 allow you to change the key associated }with a particular direction or the button, and item 6 resets all stick keys to their HomeTerm defaults. When asked to press }a key that corresponds to a particular item, press the combination of keys that you'd normally type in its place - hold down }CTRL and press a key for a control character and SHIFT-CTRL-0 to -9 for macros, as examples. See the 'Start' and 'Stop' code}s item in the main menu docs above for an explanation of how the characters are displayed on the screen.CREATING A STANDAL}ONE HOMETERM DISK-----------------------------------In order to create a standalone, self-booting disk, you need to format} a new disk, and copy over the following files from the HomePak master disk: DOS.SYS AUTORUN.SYS HOMETERM.OBJ } (optionally, your HOMETERM.SET or other config files)Rename HOMETERM.OBJ to HOMEMENU.OBJ and you're set - that's all there} is to it. Note that you won't be able to exit back to the HomePak menu, because you've tricked the system into thinking th}at HomeTerm IS your menu.FINAL THOUGHTS--------------The HomeTerm Customizer will only work with versions 3.3.3 of Home}Term and any possible subsequent versions. Future releases of HomePak will have information encoded on the disk that will te}ll the Customizer where it needs to go on the disk to find the data it needs to change. A future release of the Customizer w}ill also contain a patch function for bug fixes. It isn't included yet, as I felt it was necessary to release the Customizer} in its present form for those users that require it to run HomeTerm on their systems.
